CLASSROOM PETS

Our classroom is known for its pets. We currently have a small collection, but will be adding new members very soon. Below are our current residents. Students learn all about their pets and how to care for them. Teams of "zoologists" are trained to be responsible caregivers. What a wonderful learning experience.

roxy.jpgRocky is our Russian Tortoise. He is an omnivore with a very healthy appetite for vegetables, fruits and fresh grasses. Students will be learning about his specific habitat, dietary needs, and more. He is social and adorable. We love him!!

skinkschneiders.jpgHoudini is our resident Schneider Skink. He loves burrowing in the sand to take a snooze. He also loves to snack on mealworms and live crickets. He says that he just loves the crunch!

clawed frog.jpgAfrican Clawed Frogs are a new addition to room 28 this year. This frog is totally aquatic. It has no teeth, tongue or external ears. It uses its paws to shovel food into its mouth. This species has been known to live up to 30 years in captivity.

These classroom pets are very popular throughout the school. Other classrooms "Rent-A-Pet" with the Falcon Tickets they earn through the PBIS program in school. You can probably guess which ones are the most popular.

FYI ~ Although critter tanks are kept very sanitary, students are required to wear rubber gloves when tending critter habitats and have been trained in the proper procedure for the removal of gloves. Also, after removing gloves, students are required to wash their hands thoroughly before resuming any other activity.
